FELIPE JUVARA BRIDGE OVER THE A-2 MOTORWAY IN MADRID

This bridge uses two parallel weathering steel box girders connected to the concrete top slab in a very wide composite action system of constant depth.

One of the main features of the bridge are its composite piers. The weathering steel does not cover the inner faces of the piers so as so to reveal their structural nature.

In order to reduce the volume of the abutments and give them a more pleasing aesthetics, their backwalls have been partially set back creating a castellated shape similar to that of the soffit of the deck and resulting in a transition area that seems to launch the deck whilst increasing its apparent slenderness.
