REHABILITATION OF THE BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER JARAMA IN ALGETE ALGETE

Project details

Technical Data

  • Total length: 66 m
  • Deck width: 10 m (widened)

Description

The rehabilitation of this historic bridge is characterised by the trend to preserve the existing 19th century structure, upgrading them so to meet the new service requirements.

A new bridge was not a valid option as this would have required the construction and the raising of embankments and the pier foundations   would have caused serious disruption of the riverbed. A single span bridge over the river would have doubled the cost of the eventual solution of widening the existing roadway.

In order to adapt the bridge to current needs, the volumes between the spandrel walls of the  stone arches were emptied and replaced by a concrete  system which included connection to a system of micropiles, in such a way that the self weight of  the precast widening slabs and the new service loads  would by no means affect the original stone structure. The parapets were taken apart and reassembled at the edges of these slabs.
