DOHA METRO - RED LINE SOUTH STATIONS

Description

The three designed metro stations (Economic Zone, Ras Bu Fontas, Al Wakra) are part of the construction project of the new elevated and at grade metro Red Line South of Doha in Qatar.

Each station has a different architectural and structural configuration, due to the relative position between two subway tracks or future construction phases of nearby roads. Station Ras Bu Fontas is characterized by the subway tracks at two different levels, with a direct foundation from which concrete portal frames arise, arranged every 10 meters and transverse to the axis of the tube; the secondary structure for slabs is realised by composite beams or hollowcore elements.Economic Zone Station has a standard solution with both track at the same level, with a similar RBF structural solution, but with portal frames every 20 meters. Among these frames, the secondary structure of steel truss or composite beams materializes slabs at different levels.

Finally the design of the station Al Wakra has to consider the construction of two tunnels for roads, one on each side of the station, with the metro operating, tunnels which even overlap the footprint of the station itself. In order to allow excavation outdoor up to about 8 meters below the current ground level, the final solution consists of pile foundation, from which a pier starts with a cantilevered piercap collecting the concrete frames that formalize the station with a solution similar to EZ station.

A very decisive factor in the design was the durability, since, as requested by Qatar Rail, the life of the building should be 120 years, this being very significant within Doha environmental conditions.
